The Petrus estate takes its name from the place on which its land is located. This place would have been named after St. Peter (Petrus in Latin) which is depicted holding the keys to paradise on the petrus wine label. Located on the commune of Pomerol the vineyard is located on the highest point of a plateau that stretches northeast of Libourne and up to the western boundary of Saint-Emilion at the top of a mound called the Button. The composition of the soil is unique: a mixture of gravel and blue clay that has a high percentage of iron much more than in the surrounding properties. This clay helps to retain a larger volume of water and to ensure the vines a regular diet even in case of prolonged drought.
